Nantes - Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, Cathedral, and Botanical Gardens

On our way to Bretagne we stopped in Nantes. I wanted to see the castle of the dukes of Bretagne.
The information posters said that the castle had fallen into disrepair and the updates and renovations to bring it back to its former glory were just started in the 1990s. We were able to go inside, but a lot of it was still closed off.
With its thick outer walls and serious moat it was more obviously a fortress than any of the other castles that we had seen thus far.

And it had a huge slide! what?! I think that was added for tourists... Unfortunately, it was not open when we were there.

We walked across town and stopped at the Nantes Cathedral.  It is where Anne de Bretagne's parents are buried.

The cathedral also had a lovely creche painting. The style reminded me of Russian artwork.

From there we headed on over to the Jardin des Plantes -- Botanical Gardens.
It was huge. We were there at lunch time and all the kids from the high school across the way were hanging out on benches around the pathways. (They have an hour and a half for lunch).
I loved how well labelled everything was. They had some of everything.
 A. loved the carnivorous plant collection.
The herb garden was especially well organized, with signs color coded according to the plant's primary medicinal use.  The red cards, for example, were all plants for the digestive system.
 Common fumitory
 Artichokes
 Milk Thistle
 Hemp Agrimony
