My Dash: Week 10

Yesterday as I was cleaning and doing the laundry the words to a Primary song kept going through my mind. "Saturday is a special day. It's the day we get ready for Sunday: we clean the house and we shop at the store...And we call it our get-the-work-done day."
My Saturdays as a child from age 5 until I was an adolescent all pretty much blend together.  My dad drove all of us kids to my gymnastics practice first thing in the morning and then on to the grocery store. Mom stayed home to clean the house.
I did gymnastics for 8 years. I later found out that my parents signed me up because I was a bit clumsy and they thought it would help my coordination.  I don't know whether it worked or not. I am still not very graceful or coordinated, but I am glad that I learned early how to practice something regularly.  I enjoyed the uneven bars the most, loathed the balance beam, and had a good time flying over the vault.  All that working out on the bars helped me to become the pull-up champion in elementary school.  The gym teacher gave me a free ice cream coupon for the cafeteria every time I did more than 5. I could usually do 10.
I looked forward to our weekly grocery shopping trip. My dad always had a shopping list.  My brother P and I were his "runners".  Dad went up and down the aisles with the littles in the cart while we went to gather items from the list. He always asked whether we had checked or calculated to make sure that we chose the one that was the best price. At the end we could pick out 25 cents worth of bulk candy for our treat.
This treat routine led to "the great gummy rat" debacle... which I will save for next week.

  1. I'm enjoying your dash. I don't remember a lot of these stories! They are fun to read.
